Kugel is a German word for ball. mouth blown glass balls, kugels, began in 1848. Due to the large size and heaviness of the blown glass, they were not hung on holiday trees, but from curtain rods and suspended from ceilings. In 1859 to 1860, smaller versions of Kugels were imported to the US. Today, these glass balls are known as friendship balls and come in a variety of colors. There are variou forms of friendship balls today ranging from Kugels to witch balls to spirit balls and gazing balls.
